What MCP is (and why it matters for feedback)

Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets AI models interact with external data sources and tools through a structured interface. Anthropic released it in late 2024. Since then, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and dozens of other companies have adopted it. MCP became a Linux Foundation project and the official MCP Registry lists hundreds of servers as of early 2026. Over 80,000 developers have starred the main awesome-mcp-servers list on GitHub — an indicator of how rapidly the ecosystem is growing.

MCP solves a simple problem: before MCP, every time you wanted an AI agent to interact with a service — a database, an API, a file system — you needed custom integration code. MCP provides a universal protocol so that any compatible agent can connect to any compatible server with zero integration code.

For feedback, this means you don't need to build a custom integration between your feedback tool and your coding agent. If the feedback tool exposes an MCP server and your agent speaks MCP, they can talk to each other immediately.

The three primitives: tools, resources, and prompts

MCP servers expose three types of capabilities:

Tools are actions the agent can take. For a feedback server, these include listing submissions with filters, reading full details of a specific submission, updating a submission's status, sending an email reply to a user, rotating API keys, and generating statistics.

Resources are data the agent can read. These include the current list of apps in your workspace, organization details, and member information. Resources provide context that helps the agent make better decisions.

Prompts are pre-built instruction templates the agent can invoke. A triage-submissions prompt, for example, tells the agent to pull all new submissions, categorize them by type and severity, and present a summary. A weekly-digest prompt generates a 7-day trend report.

Connecting to your coding agent

The MCP server endpoint is a URL your agent connects to over HTTPS. The configuration looks the same across agents — you add the server URL and an authorization header to your agent's config file.

For Windsurf, the file lives at ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json. For VS Code Copilot, it's .vscode/mcp.json. For Claude Desktop, it's claude_desktop_config.json in the app config directory.

App-scoped tokens for production

For MCP directory listings (Glama, mcp.so) or CI/CD pipelines where you want to limit access to a single app, use an sk_ token instead of ud_:

sk_ tokens are generated in the Dashboard (App Settings → Secret Key). They can only read submissions and stats for that specific app — they cannot reply, delete, manage apps, or access org settings. This makes them safe to use in public directory listings or shared environments.

Four workflows worth trying

Once connected, here are the workflows that make agent-native feedback practical.

1. Morning triage

Ask your agent:

"Check my UserDispatch inbox. Triage any new submissions — categorize by type, flag anything critical, and give me a summary."

The agent calls list_submissions with status: "new", reads each one with get_submission, and presents a categorized summary. Critical bugs get flagged. Duplicates get noted. 2. Bug-to-fix pipeline

When the agent identifies a bug report with enough context (description, URL, console errors), it can correlate the issue with your codebase. Because the agent has access to both the feedback data (via MCP) and your source code (via the editor), it can:

  1. Read the bug report and metadata
  2. Locate the relevant file and function in your codebase
  3. Identify the likely cause
  4. Propose a fix
  5. Draft a reply to the user

You review the fix, merge it, and approve the reply. The loop closes.

3. Weekly digest

The built-in weekly-digest prompt generates a structured report:

"Run the weekly digest for my main app."

The agent generates a summary covering: total submissions this week, breakdown by type (bugs, questions, ratings), resolution rate, average response time, top recurring themes, and any unresolved critical items. This replaces the "open the dashboard and squint at graphs" ritual.

4. Batch replies

For apps with active users, feedback accumulates. Instead of replying one by one:

"Draft replies for all resolved submissions from the past week. Be helpful and brief."

The agent iterates through resolved submissions, drafts a contextual reply for each, and presents them for your review. You approve, edit, or skip each one. The reply_to_submission tool sends the email.

What makes a good MCP feedback server

Not every feedback-to-MCP integration is equal. Here's what to look for:

Hosted vs. self-hosted. A hosted MCP server (like UserDispatch's) means zero infrastructure to manage — no Docker containers, no database setup, no uptime concerns. A self-hosted option gives you full control but requires maintenance. Both are valid; choose based on your operational preference. For teams building vibe-coded apps, a hosted server removes one more thing to maintain.

Tool granularity. A server with 3 generic tools is less useful than one with 17 specific tools. The more granular the tool set, the more precisely the agent can act. Tools like rotate_app_key and get_stats may seem niche, but they enable workflows that generic CRUD tools can't.

Built-in prompts. Pre-built prompts encode best-practice workflows. Without them, you're writing the same triage instructions every time you ask the agent to process feedback. Good prompts save time and produce more consistent results.

Metadata capture. The widget or feedback mechanism should capture browser, OS, viewport, URL, user agent, and console errors automatically. This metadata is what makes the agent's triage useful — without it, every submission is just a text blob.
